Workshop on Economic Mobility Unites Young Scholars from Across Istanbul
On May 28, 2025, the Turkish-German University (TGU) hosted a successful workshop on Economic Mobility, organised in close collaboration with Bogazici University, Istanbul University, and ZEW – Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research Mannheim. The event was made possible with funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
The workshop was organised by Nur Banu Kartal (TGU) and Elif Erbay (Istanbul University) and brought together 15 early-career researchers, master’s and PhD students, as well as junior postdoctoral researchers, from leading institutions across Istanbul, including Koç University, Marmara University, Yıldız Technical University, Turkish-German University, and the Central Bank of Turkey.
The academic program featured lectures by Guido Neidhöfer, senior researcher at ZEW Mannheim and professor at the TGU, and Orhan Torul, Professor of Economics at Boğaziçi University. Dr. Neidhöfer introduced key theories, concepts, and empirical strategies to study economic mobility and inequality. Prof. Torul followed with an insightful lecture on intergenerational mobility in Türkiye, exploring both recent data and policy implications.
In the afternoon, participants had the opportunity to present their own research in a lively and constructive session. Each presentation was followed by in-depth feedback from fellow participants and faculty, including professors from TGU. This collaborative format created a dynamic space for academic exchange, peer learning, and networking.
The workshop was the first in a series of initiatives aimed at supporting junior scholars at the TGU and fostering cross-institutional collaboration on pressing issues in the economics of inequality and social mobility.
We thank the DAAD for their generous support and look forward to continuing this fruitful cooperation.
