Brown Bag Seminar Series

25.03.2021

In this week's Brown Bag Seminar series, we invited M. Alper Çenesiz (Nottingham Trent University) to present his research findings titled "What if Immunity Wanes?". Using a simple economic model that assumes social distancing reduces transmission, Mr. Çenesiz, explaining the impact of nonpersistent covid-19 immunity on epidemic dynamics and social activities, stated that most pandemic studies have been conducted under the assumption that immunity is durable. In a situation where immunity wanes, there is a possibility that the pandemic will turn into an endemic, and the guidelines for this to follow must be different. For example, lack of immunity precludes the possibility of direct herd immunity.

The model also distinguishes between centralized and decentralized decision-making mechanisms so that comparisons can be made regarding these and crisis / cost management. In this way, decision makers can see the front more clearly as they take action.

Finally, according to the model at the beginning of the epidemic, there is no difference between centralized and decentralized decision-making mechanisms. This provides an opportunity for the Society to study the durability of Covid-19 immunity.

We thank Mr. Çenesiz for sharing his research with us.
